It is widely used in fertility assessment to give a sense of how the ovaries may respond to treatment, and it can support the assessment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where levels are often higher. AMH naturally declines with age as the egg supply falls, and it does not by itself predict whether or when you will conceive. What affects your levels

A lower AMH may indicate a smaller remaining egg supply and tends to occur naturally with increasing age, and sometimes after ovarian surgery or certain medical treatments. A higher AMH is often seen in polycystic ovary syndrome, reflecting a larger number of small follicles. Some hormonal contraceptives can modestly lower measured levels. Because AMH is only one part of the fertility picture, only your healthcare provider can interpret what your value means for you.

Signs and symptoms

AMH itself causes no symptoms; it is a hormone measured in the blood to reflect ovarian reserve, not something you can feel. Any related symptoms come from the underlying situation rather than from AMH, such as the irregular cycles, acne, or excess hair growth sometimes seen with PCOS, or cycle changes as menopause approaches. Foods that help

No specific food changes AMH directly or rebuilds ovarian reserve, but a balanced eating pattern supports overall reproductive and hormonal health: plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, oily fish, nuts, and olive oil, along Mediterranean lines. Adequate protein and good sources of iron, folate, and vitamin D support general wellbeing when trying to conceive. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight and regular activity also help support normal hormonal balance.

Foods to limit

No food raises AMH or reverses the natural decline in ovarian reserve, but limiting ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and excess alcohol supports overall hormonal health, which matters especially around fertility. In PCOS, easing back on refined carbohydrates and sugary foods may help with insulin balance, which your healthcare provider can advise on.
