Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that takes part in the immune response, especially to allergens and parasites. They make up a small share of the white blood cells, and the test counts how many there are in the blood. Retesting shows how it changes over time.
Allergen exposure, such as pollen season, dust or animals, often raises the count. Some medicines can raise or lower it. The number also varies over the day and tends to be lower in the morning and during stress, when cortisol is higher.
