eGFR (Creatinine)

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (creatinine) estimates kidney function by measuring how efficiently creatinine — a byproduct of muscle metabolism — is filtered by the kidneys.

What it is

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (creatinine) estimates kidney function by measuring how efficiently creatinine — a byproduct of muscle metabolism — is filtered by the kidneys. It’s the most commonly used method, though results can be influenced by age, sex, and muscle mass. A low result may indicate declining filtration and increased risk of kidney or cardiovascular complications.

What affects your levels

Low creatinine-based eGFR is commonly caused by kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or dehydration. It can also be skewed in very muscular or very lean individuals. Elevated results may reflect hyperfiltration, often an early sign of metabolic stress or overconsumption of protein.

Signs and symptoms

A low eGFR (creatinine) may cause swelling, high blood pressure, fatigue, nausea, and reduced urine output. Symptoms often appear late, so regular testing and dietary management are essential to prevent progression.

Foods that help

Support healthy kidney function with hydrating foods (watermelon, celery), low-sodium meals, and antioxidants like berries, turmeric, and green vegetables. Balance protein intake — especially animal protein — and consider legumes or tofu to ease kidney load.

Foods to limit

Reduce salt, processed meats, fried foods, and high-protein diets if kidney function is compromised. Also avoid phosphorus-rich soft drinks and high-potassium items (e.g., bananas, potatoes) in more advanced decline. Moderation and hydration are key.
