HOMA-IR

HOMA-IR is the most widely validated non-invasive measure of insulin resistance.

What it is

HOMA-IR is the most widely validated non-invasive measure of insulin resistance. Even mildly elevated values (>2.0) predict future type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, and accelerated biological aging years before clinical symptoms.

What affects your levels

Excess visceral fat, inactivity, refined carbohydrates, poor sleep, chronic stress, hormonal conditions (PCOS, hypothyroidism, Cushing's), corticosteroids and antipsychotics. Unexpectedly low HOMA-IR warrants investigation of inadequate insulin production.

Signs and symptoms

Fatigue after meals, difficulty losing weight, sugar cravings, brain fog, central weight gain, skin tags, acanthosis nigricans. Long-term: pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver.

Foods that help

High-fibre legumes, oats, non-starchy vegetables slow insulin demand. Lean protein, olive oil, avocado, nuts, fatty fish, fermented foods. Vinegar with meals reduces postprandial insulin.

Foods to limit

Refined carbohydrates, sugary beverages, trans fats, excess alcohol, processed meats.
