HOMA-β quantifies how hard the pancreas is working to maintain glucose. Together with HOMA-IR it reveals the full metabolic picture: declining HOMA-β over time is one of the earliest indicators of progression toward type 2 diabetes, often detectable before HbA1c rises.
High (>150%): compensatory hypersecretion driven by insulin resistance — a warning pattern. Low (<50%) despite elevated glucose: progressive beta cell exhaustion, long-standing insulin hyperstimulation, autoimmune attack (Type 1/LADA), glucolipotoxicity, pancreatic inflammation.
Often asymptomatic. Progressive fatigue, blood-sugar variability, weight gain despite normal calorie intake may reflect declining beta cell function.
Mediterranean pattern. Intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating reduce beta cell demand.
